The Lovat, Loch Ness is sponsoring the team on their journey & are proud to have such a valued member of the hotel, as Neil, joining in their cycle for charity as well as personal satisfaction.

THE CHALLENGES OF LONG DISTANCE CYCLING

Not only is cycling an increasingly popular sport, but long distance cycling in particular is proving a big lure for those who want to set their bodies the ultimate cycling challenge. As part of their training and development programme for cycling the arduous 1000 mile Lands End to John o’Groats route (LEJoG) in July, local cycling enthusiasts, the Inverness Spinners, have invited internationally renowned exercise physiologist, Prof Richard Davison to help them prepare for their gruelling ten day challenge. Prof Davison is giving a talk about ‘The Challenges of Long Distance Cycling’ on Sunday, 19th June at Fairburn Activity Centre, Muir of Ord. The event is open to all, but places are limited and must be booked in advance. Prof Davison said: “I was delighted the Inverness Spinners (my father is a team member) asked me to help out in this way. There are more ways to plan for such a demanding sporting challenge than just putting in hours on the road. I’ll be talking about how best to prepare for long distance events, including sportives and multiple day rides. I’ll also be considering the main challenges the team will face during the ride itself, with specific focus on pacing and nutrition, and will be drawing on personal experience and research studies in scientific literature.” Prof Davison has over 20 years experience in his field, and an international reputation in investigating the factors that influence cycling performance and the physiological responses to cycle ergometry. Other areas of research interest include the use of exercise and physical activity to improve health and quality of life in the general population and clinical groups. He is the current Chair of the Cycling Science Steering Group of the World Commission of Science, Editor for the Journal of Sports Sciences and Sport and former Chair of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (2006-2008).

Prof Davison also tries to practice what he preaches. As a competitive cyclist he has won ten medals at Scottish Championships, including six gold medals. Richard also represented Scotland at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria as a cycling coach and he continues to be very heavily involved with the British Cycling Coach Education Scheme helping to train the future generation of cycle coaches.

The Inverness Spinners’ team of thirteen aims to raise over £15,000 for their chosen charities - Multiple Sclerosis Scotland and local children’s charity SNAP, the Special Needs Action Programme – undertaking the challenge from 21st to 31st July which will see them travel the 1,000 miles from the south of England to the north of Scotland in ten days, accompanied by a two-strong support team. The group’s abilities range from some who, at the start of training, had never been on a road bike before, to others who have already cycled the route or done similar challenges in North Vietnam, France and Ireland.

In 2006, we were honoured to host Michael's stay at the Lovat when he came over from America to set the world record for paddling Loch Ness...he achieved this in a record 5 hours, 47 minutes & 30 seconds.

We now have someone else coming to stay at the hotel who is going to swim Loch Ness but this time it is not for a world record...it is just for fun!

Jaime, from Spain, is an amateur long distance swimmer and has already swum: the English Channel; Gibraltar; NYCSwim 2010 - to name a few. What was missing in his growing album, was Loch Ness. He is also hoping that Nessie will make a friendly appearance!

He swims for a foundation called "Siempre Adelante" to raise money for people that suffer Latheral Amiotrophic Sclerosis. His slogan is "nado porque puedo y para los que no pueden", that means more or less: "I swim because I am able to do it as well as I do it for people that are not as lucky as me".

Is anyone else planning on a challenge across Loch Ness? Maybe you even want to beat Michael's world record? If so, get in touch - the hotel will offer you accommodation throughout the challenge which will be complimentary based on you beating the record.

Launch Events 2011

The 2011 Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland Awards (VIBES) is now in its twelfth year & aims to recognise businesses of all sizes & sectors employing environmental best practice in their daily activity to cut down on resource use, increase sustainability, improve reputation & benefit their company’s bottom-line.

This year’s awards will launch through a series of free events across the country in May. The launch events are being hosted by previous VIBES winners - the Lovat being one...so that you can see the work that we carried out in order to win an award & to understand the benefits it has had to the company.

Businesses will be able to find out more information about how the awards work and meet some of the VIBES steering group who will be on hand to answer any questions.

Sunday's Inverness Half Marathon thankfully went ahead despite the possibility of a snow cancellation.

The weather was a little damp, cold & windy but nothing to worry about.

The Vienna marathon is getting closer, 17th April 2011 so this half marathon was part of the training.

The Lovat team certainly did Rabbie proud on 25th January 2011.

Considering the cancellation of the 2010 celebrations due to bad weather, the organisation for 2011 started with a little trepidation....we need not have feared!

With bookings flying in, even until the very last hour, all 44 guests were welcomed with open arms to the Lovat's second exceptionally successful celebration of Burns' life, love, lifestyle & literature.

Highland music was provided by 4 talented musicians, adding some background ambience to balance the tasty supper & the switched on staff.

Julia again put her creative hands to work on the tartan clad decorations, while Neil whipped of his troosers & donned a kilt for the evening. The 'Chieftain o' the Pudding Race' was staggered into the Dining Room to the sound of 'A Man's a Man' - was cleverly Addressed & then washed down with a whisky nip.

To make sure that the event 'went' as it should, Rabbie watched over the gathering from his aloof yet approving projection on the wall.

They are celebrating both David's 69th Birthday as well as their 41st Wedding anniversary.

Voluntary Payback Scheme Update from Destination Loch Ness

Thank you all for your contributions.

Since the scheme was launched in December last year participating members have now raised almost £600.

All monies to date are going towards interpretation on the South Loch Ness Trail Project (Update attached for your information). When the Trail is officially launched early summer next year, all participating members of the Scheme will receive acknowledgement of their contribution in publicity material for the trail.

We hope in due course to make contributions to other environmental projects around the loch but until we have more DLN members participating in the scheme, this is unlikely. So please, if you know someone whose business could be part of the Scheme we would appreciate some gentle persuasion! As we are all aware, visitors are more than happy to make a contribution.

David had a lucky escape whilst driving home along the A9 on his return from New York. A roll of wire fell of the back of a farm vehicle & got caught around the car's prop shaft!

The AA came to the rescue to cut out the wire & set David back on his way!

Well...Caroline did it!

Out of 44, 829 runners, Caroline came 8649 – this means she came in the first 19% of runners. She also came 1480 out of all the females running.

It truly was an immense experience – the sun shone, the skies were blue & the skyline was amazing. The crowds were around 2 million & were an incredible boost along the route. David, Caroline's father, went out to support her & managed to catch a glimpse of her running 3 times along the way.

In the end, Caroline ran, representing the Fire Department, FDNY – they also gave her a little preferential treatment: from 7am there was a pre-race tent with coffee & cover until the start at 9:40am. They then all met for drinks & managed to get showered up after the marathon in a posh Central Park hotel!

Caroline's final time was 3hrs, 43 mins & 59 secs.

So 'Congratulations' goes to: Joe Guadagno who guessed 3hrs, 44mins so was 1 second out! A voucher will be on its way to him!

No No No...

Do you often find yourself in a similar situation? Hampered by Scotland's inability to offer you what you want, when you want it & how you want it?

Well maybe a few years ago businesses could be picky - they could dictate to you what they gave you, how they gave it to you & if they gave it to you.

However, cunningly enough this recession has certainly sharpened attitude...it has made the customer wise to the fact that actually...they are entitled to get what they want, when they want it & how they want it...they want quality, they want to know that their hard earned money is going on something that will be a benefit to them, enrich their lives & have a positive impact. If they don't get this, well - they'll think with their feet & never return or more likely they'll think with their computers, type until their heart is content on sites such as Tripadvisor...then they'll never go back...

So the recession has affected the customer, the consumer & the visitor - it has changed their way of thinking...& why not? Why should the business be complacent - expecting the visitor to come whatever the consequence. Businesses need to wake up, if they haven't already & home in on the fact that actually - we are in business to be a business, to make a business & to offer a future business. It is not all about now - it is about the...I can't quite reach it yet bit...

This picture makes me laugh but if you really think about it - it is incredibly sad because you only have to look around you to see that subconsciously, this is all around us...'Don't park here'; 'Don't do this...'; 'Don't do that...' - why can't we educate people to actually do what should be common sense because we should have a pride in our country. Do we really have to indicatively tell people not to litter? I mean c'mon...is respect so low?

Well, if hard times are making people think about how they spend their money & what they get for it then maybe it is only time before this will spread into other ways of life. We need leadership, action & positivity to bring those who are quite happy to be complacent, with us or indeed leave them behind to moan & groan...well they are good at it, aren't they?

It is all to easy to sit back & say nothing...maybe you can't be bothered; maybe you don't actually care; maybe there is no-one to talk to; or maybe you are just fed up saying the same old sentences on the same old topics to the same 'old' people (obviously not wanting to categorise any age groups here).

It is all to easy to sit back & be complacent to expect business to come knocking on your door & to expect that phone to keep ringing but reality isn't so kind & if you haven't already had a sharp prod to realise that you actually need to work at business to make it work for you, your industry & dare I sound a little American here, & your country - then you seriously need to take your clothes off & step outside into this bitter, dreich night (or maybe that is how you are getting the business?)...to wake the *#?! up.

What I am getting at is...things are going to change & like it or not, things are going to have to change...sustainability is a word here to stay.

Attending a 'think tank' - I thought it quite apt to scribble down:

Sustainability v Selfishness

Sustainability - a word that scares most people because it has 6 syllables but honestly - it is just another word for, say, 'survival'. There, that's 3 syllables - can you swallow that?

Sustainability is not only about the environment - it is about competition, community, Scotland, You, Me, profit, quality, protection + other aspects of business development. Sustainability is your business plan - it is your way forward & ours.

I could go on but am losing my thought, sustainability ironically getting the better of me - just have your say & make a difference here.

Back in 2007-2008, the Lovat did a 'Bank on Us' campaign, offering guests the opportunity to 'Take a Chance' or 'Community Chest' on arrival at this Loch Ness hotel. The cards would offer anything from a bunch of grapes to an upgrade straight to the Grand Master Bedroom - it proved very successful.

Now monopoly life is going to be for real with the introduction of a new game featuring this Highland area...we all wait with anticipation!

Eating & Drinking Guide 2010

Is it wrong to start a review with ice-cream? If so, special rules must be invoked: the home-made ice-cream at The Lovat deserves headline status, with dreams made of a scoop of the lemon crème fraiche.

The restaurant for The Lovat Hotel is a little bit different. There’s a girlie, 'SATC' hint to the décor that’s a surprise in the Highlands, but it's sufficiently funky not to scare your boyfriend off. As oft-claimed as it is, a number of ingredients here do come from near rather than far: Lochaber salmon and venison, West Coast mussels, Stornoway black pudding . . . these are served with an inclusive vibe that aims to please everyone.

The dairy-intolerant aren’t excluded from the ice-cream experience with a home-made soya version available, along with gluten-free options. The slight quirkines of the décor extends to the food: original touches such as a fried poached egg or chicken liver and fois gras brûlée rouse the curiosity but also deliver on the palate.

As far as service goes - The Lovat recently won a gold medal from VisitScotland, so no worries on that front either.

Loving Lochaber!

Lochaber, No Fuss Events 1/2 marathon, was held on Sunday, 16th May 2010.

The Lovat Team comprised of Cooper, Drummond & Caroline who completed the undulating course in 1hr, 59.30 - not bad for our 1st attempt!

The day was beautiful with interspersed sunshine on the Scottish mountains. David Gregory came to cheer us on as well.

Why reduce waste?

It is increasingly difficult and expensive to dispose of waste

A hotel guest generates about 1kg (2lb) of waste per night, more than half of it in paper, plastic and cardboard. In addition to negative environmental impact, as landfill capacity diminishes, so the cost of waste disposal becomes more expensive. In the UK, for example, landfilling costs are now £48 per tonne (1.1 tons) compared to £18 a tonne in 2005.

It creates huge environmental problems

Landfilling not only takes up valuable land space but causes air, water and soil pollution, discharging carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane into the atmosphere and chemicals and pesticides into the earth and groundwater. In addition, waste often has to travel long distances to the landfill site, consuming fuel and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

To meet tougher government legislation

National and local governments are introducing more stringent requirements with regards to waste disposal to landfill and recycling, and the hotel industry must respond to these high green standards.

It is an inefficient resource use

Often it is more resource-efficient to make new products by recycling rather than starting from scratch. For example, recycling used aluminium tins into new tins requires 95% less energy than processing bauxite ore into aluminium. Many discarded materials, such as furniture and food, also have value.

It makes good business sense

* When supplies are used more efficiently, it saves money on raw materials.
* Income can be generated by selling old equipment and reusing or recycling valuable waste materials.

Pat Maher, a former hotel executive now serving as an environmental consultant to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, says that good waste management and recycling is an effective public relations tool, because it shows a dedication to corporate responsibility with environmental policy. “Doing in-room recycling is important because the guest sees that,” he says. Also, by removing paper, plastic and other recyclables from their waste, hotels can trim their disposal bill by as much as 50% — a significant savings in cities where waste removal is expensive. “In New York City, it’s not unusual to have a $100,000-a-year waste bill,” says Maher, “and if you can cut that by $50,000, that’s a big deal to the operator of a hotel.”

After getting the bedrooms ready & clearing up after breakfast, the Lovat team headed out for a day on the water. Caroline stayed behind to hold the fort out front whilst James held the kitchen.

The team spent the day on the River Garry, with instruction from Highland Activties. Despite it being rather cold, everyone had loads of fun.

The day ended with a buffet, some drinks, some truth or dare antics & also good old Karaoke! We had a dance off between Salsa & Ballet as well as some 'X' Factor singing style displays! We said our 'final' Goodbye to Ailsa who after 3 years of Lovat Life, has headed to another job role in the area - we wish her well.

Thanks to all those who participated & made it such a great day.

What an amazing email to receive whilst away for the weekend snowboarding...on Scottish snow no less!

"My wife and I stayed at The Lovat last Saturday and had a most enjoyable time. Thank you so much and congratulations on the transformation you have made to the hotel.

I mentioned to your receptionist that the date you have for the opening of the railway at Fort Augustus (1880) is not correct. The line opened on 22 July 1903, closed temporarily on 31 October 1911, reopened on 1 August 1913 and finally closed to passengers on 1 December 1933 and completely on 31 December 1946. The extension from the station over the Caledonian Canal by means of a swing bridge then over the River Oich on a bridge the castellated piers of which still stand in the river and on to the pier on Loch Ness was used by one train per day for only four years until 30 September 1907.

I hope you find this of interest and don't mind me pointing out the mistake in your literature! Thanks again, and best wishes for success with the Lovat Jack Kernahan"

Despite the treacherous conditions - you can hardly miss the beauty of Scotland covered in snow - heavy branches & white purity at its best. However, it is getting to the point of willing the ice, slush & cold to end, not because we are averse to a bit of bitter chill but more to the fact that we are so unprepared for this weather. Lack of salt on the roads & an inability to function as normal creates a sense of panic & disruption to most individuals - something that should really be avoided.

The Highlands feels the most organised out of the lot but gaps & cracks are starting to form as the usual 2 days of heavy snow is starting to creep into what could be 2 months.

Business suffers under the stress & strain of cancelled bookings, limited sales & frustrated customers...not exactly what we wished from Santa for Christmas but it makes you think...maybe we weren't that good in 2009 afterall so instead of a sack of coal we have a blanket of snow.

To keep her eye on the New York marathon, in November 2010, Caroline is entering some UK races to test her stamina! The first of its kind will be the Edinburgh 10k in May 2010, closely followed by the Great North Run. If you would like to get involved in supporting her, the first charity is Alzheimers, on behalf of a team mate whose father is struggling with the illness.

The Rocket has arrived!

Doug Boyle from Organic Services (Scotland) Ltd, kindly delivered the brand new Rocket from Edinburgh to the Lovat, Loch Ness on Friday, 18th December 2009.

Compost Doctors Scotland & Sarah from Compost Recycling Newtwork for Scotland (CRNS) have assisted in installing the first ever Rocket in the Highlands.

The Rocket will take about 1 month to be fully operational, producing some decent compost for the Lovat garden.

A huge thank you goes to all those involved in helping the Lovat in their aim for zero food waste, reduced carbon emissions & reduced waste to landfill.

Sourcemap is a ground-breaking web site that provides business owners with a means to diagnose and market their supply chain and carbon footprint. It is the first of its kind, offering a free and open collection of tools to share the ethos behind sourcing and business practices. The website guides users through the process of designing an interactive supply chain map and carbon footprint calculation to be embedded on external sites and social networks. As part of our first pilot study, we are working with progressive small companies concerned with supporting their local communities and the environment. Through this study, Sourcemap is being refined for ease of use by decision makers in hospitality, food and drink, and craft industries.

The Lovat, Loch Ness is an independent eco-conscious hotel overlooking the natural beauty of Loch Ness and its surroundings. Managing Partner Caroline Gregory operates the hotel and restaurant with an underlying respect for the environment and surrounding region, as evidenced by a seasonal and locally-sourced menu, eco-conscious appliances and design, and ambitious initiatives to reduce the overall environmental impact. She is accounting for the emissions incurred by her guests' travel to the hotel in an effort to offer a carbon-neutral destination.

Caroline inspired the application of Sourcemap to travel and hospitality businesses. D&G's living quarters - Alcatraz!

D&G are in Alaska! They won't be baked that is for sure but I shall keep you updated with their shenanigans!

So far:

travelling at sea on their cruise

G had her hair styled
D had some acupuncture on his neck
oh yes, they shook hands with the Captain!
Were at Sitka, a small town almost 1,000 miles from Vancouver with a lot of Russia influence
Saw the Salmon running up the Indian River
Looked out for a Brown Bear which had been sighted in the Reserve
Off to Skagway on a Train
Having a great time and have met some interesting people
Both having a great time
Went on the White Pass Railway built in the late 1890 to transport supplies to the Yukon when the GOLD RUSH was on. It rises to almost 3,000 feet
Juneau - here we visited the Mendenhall Glacier a great site
Been on the cruise for almost a week now, on Sunday we have a full day at sea

Little Alex came to The Lovat, Loch Ness on work placement before heading back to Nottingham for Hospitality College. Alex (front left hand side) spent 3 weeks at the hotel, learning the ropes as a introduction into the trade.

"Today reminded me of your wonderful hotel!

Forty years ago I was a student working in the Lovat Arms Hotel for the summer when it was owned by the Sabin family.

It is where I and all of the staff, who were a wonderful bunch of locals and students like myself from around the world, watched the men land on the moon. We all crammed into the little staff room at the back of the hotel next to the bar entrance and watched in awe on a black and white tv for hours on end until eventually they landed.

It was a memorable experience that will never leave me as will all the happy times that I had working in the hotel over three years.

There were some great locals working in the hotel also in the bar and the restaurant, real characters suppose now they have all passed on.

Anyway glad to see the hotel is going from strength to strength, just thought I would share this memory with you if you find any old photos from that period please let me know.

I feel honoured to have been invited to the Royal opening of the Glendoe project, as hosted by SSE today, Monday, 29th June 2009.

50 guests were invited to the ceremony, which also included a tour of the dam & underground action.

SSE has provided the Lovat, Loch Ness, with the off-season boost & support it needed - but the relationship has been one of mutual friendship, built solidly over the past 4 years. SSE staff have returned with their families & wives, making us realise that staying here was not just part of the job.

The day was truly warming & I am delighted to have been a part of this special occasion.

Thank you to Ian Marchant & Susan Braid who made it possible for me to chat with the Queen & even offer her a special rate to stay at the Lovat, if she found herself passing in the future!

Caroline Gregory (29), Managing partner, Lovat Arms

Gregory's parents David and Geraldine used to run the celebrated Torridon Hotel inWester Ross and when they retired bought the Lovat Arms by Loch Ness as a"hobby". But Gregory is very much in charge and ambitious to roll out the Lovat brand worldwide. Despite initially planning to avoid working in the hotel industry Gregory did a degree in Law and Business Management at the University of Glasgow then globe-trotted for a year before working in London doing various jobs. She returned to Scotland in 2005 to run the hotel which has been relaunched after major refurbishment. She oversees a team of 25 in the high season and is not afraid to muck in and do the washing up.

Geraldine she is our Queen, a busy little bee,
she is always drinking nectar from the Lovat tree.
And from our hearts, we want to say, 'we love you very much' so Mother hen, you know us all we are your little clutch!

David, 'You the Man!' we're at your beck & call,
